Said the Shadow to the Sun,
“You cannot touch me,
I move, I lean, I dance
Always half a hair’s width beyond your reach.
And when you rise in the east to pursue me
I roll away from your blazing eye,
Hiding behind stone, behind wood,
Behind flesh of child, woman, and man.
My domain is immune to your radiant rule,
A slice of night that defies the morning and noon,
A sliver of shifting, sliding darkness, that is me.
Though you surround me with your murderous beams
Yet I thrive as death among life
Hidden from you in plain sight
So long as you flood this earth, my islands will float
Upon your burning sea!”
Said the Sun to the Shadow,
“Indeed you speak truth,
For you move, you lean, and you dance
Always a hair’s width beyond my reach.
And you do indeed scurry away unscathed
When my blazing eye opens and hunts for you.
But it is I, the very thing that you despise
Which sustains and preserves you, gives you life.
For when I make my bed in the west to sleep
You meld into the lightless flesh of your brothers and sisters.
You lose your form, your freedom, your soul
And join a dead, frozen world of black.
Shadow without shadows
Devoid of shape, of movement, of life.
For you see, my dear Shadow, I have no need of you
As I will shine with or without you.
But you, as a parasite to its host, you have all need of me
For by the light of my eye I give you life,
But in the blink of sundown, I bury you,
Drown you in a sea of your own, cold night,
A prisoner in your own dark matter
Until I choose to raise you up at dawn again.”
