“Bread of Tears” is at once engaging and unsettling. It’s not a “one read and done” collection. On my first pass through Nathaniel S. The belief that everything happens for a reason just might be wrong. Perhaps some things happen serendipitously like walking into the street and being hit by a car, or walking into the street and not being hit by a car. It’s not always guided by some finger appearing out of the sky and with a deep Charlton Heston voice saying, “Don’t walk into the street!” Sometimes an ant is crushed...

Stan Grimes lives in Indiana with his wife and pets. He is a graduate of Indiana University. He leans left politically, so much he falls over sometimes. Vinyl Night and Other Miseries is his complete book of poetry. Though, he has written sci-fi, suspense, and mystery novels for other publishers, his first love is poetry. His poetry is sometimes intense, emotional, but always honest.

Author bio:
Captain Peter Cain (born 1954) spent all his childhood years living in a small village called Buxworth which is situated in the hills of the Peak District in North Derbyshire. At the age of 20, he broke away from village life to become a Redcoat Entertainer at the Butlins Holiday Centre in Ayr, Scotland. From there he advanced from being a bingo caller and then manager to sales executive for a cleaning firm before finally owning his own business which he eventually sold. He aimed for a complete 'life change' and went through the process of becoming a professional boat skipper. He sailed around to Portugal and settled in the beautiful tourist locality of Lagos, which is situated in the west of the Algarve. He has worked in the region as a skipper on various tourist boats during the summer seasons since 2000. When he was in his early 30’s, having always shown an interest in writing, he was a whisker away from having some of his work accepted for TV. Until recently his work commitments prevented him from further pursuing his love of writing and poetry, but now has time to return to his favourite pastime. His first book, which has been published through Kindle is called 'Percy the Parrot - and Other Pet Subjects', which is based on the African Grey parrot Peter once owned and also in the book are some of his many other humorous encounters with various creatures ranging from mice to elephants. To add to this, his new book 'A Sign of the Rhymes' which was released on March 1st 2012 contains humorous rhymes, 'Puzzling Poems' and a concept he has named 'Re-versing Rhyme', an interesting take on poetry. Peter has just finished writing a follow up to his first book which is entitled 'Percy the Parrot 2, the bird's perspective''. A light hearted fictional account of events as experienced by 'Percy'. The book is also now available through Kindle publishing. Peter is presently in the process of writing more poetry and rhymes with an illustrated children's 'A-Z of Animal Poems'.

Philip Burton was born in Dunfermline and raised in Ramsgate, Kent. He has been a Primary school head teacher in Lancashire and is married with five children. He is a 2005 Lancaster Litfest winner. In 1998 he was short–listed for The Kent and Sussex Open Poetry Competition , and for the Thetford and Wymondham Annual Poetry Competition in 1999. Philip Burton is known to children as “Pip The Poet”. Twelve of his poems for children have been published in major antholgies in the last few years. Steve Rudd, Managing director of The Kings England Press, (publisher of the phenomenally successful Gez Walsh) said of the collection The Treasure Shop, “..…cries out for a national publisher.” Many of his poems have been illustrated by Steve Hutton. Philip has visited over one hundred schools and libraries in the last few years, as a writer in education, providing poetry days for children 4–14, and has built a reputation for providing enjoyable and educational performances and workshops. In 2004 he gave a successful presentation at the NAWE annual conference in York on the theme of VOICE. He was appointed as a mentor by NAWE. Over two hundred and fifty of his poems have been published in a range of literary magazines during the last seven years, including: P.N. Review , Stand, Smiths Knoll, Orbis, Envoi, Brando’s Hat, The Frogmore Papers, The Swansea Review, Links, Prism International (Canada), and Troubadour (USA). His first collection, The Raven’s Diary, published by Joe Publish, was greeted with enthusiasm on both sides of The Irish Sea. Six other pamphlets and a first full collection have followed. Admirers of his work include Michael Schmidt, Derrick Buttress, and Don Paterson. Five of his poems were included in the Peace Poems anthology (Crocus Books) in 2003. Jessie Lendennie at Salmon Publishing accepted a collection of his, The Raven’s Diary, for publication in 2001. Inflation, and an Irish government directive restricting publication of non–Irish writer’s, meant cancellation. Philip judged the Manifold Found Poem competition, and Rossendale Writer’s poetry competition in 2003. He was hailed by Rosie Rogosie as “a new voice come to Manchester”, and appeared in 2000 on the same bill as Adrian Mitchell at The Burnley Arts Festival 2000. Guest Poet slots have included: Manky Poets, Manchester, The White Hart, Todmorden and Live at The Trades, Haslingden.

Author bio:
My life, sort of The writers whose lives interest me most are either long dead or have led lives not typical of writers. Yet it evidently helps readers to know about writers. A writer whose works I’ve recently become acquainted with, Jodi Picoult, writes a lot about herself on her web page, posts candid photos, and I’m guessing this helps readers connect with her books. Megan McCafferty, author of Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, etc., started a retroblog—her diary from age ten through twenty-something, in part, I gather from reading a review in Salon.com, to separate herself from her characters (http://www.meganmccafferty.com/retroblogger/ ). There’s nothing about my life that will enhance the experience of reading my novels. To the extent that they’re autobiographical, they’re not so in any direct way. Flaubert said of Madame Bovary, “Emma, c'est moi.” In the same sense, I’m all the characters in, say, Rigoberto and his two wives: Rigoberto Calderón, Carmen Noble de Calderón, Juan the apprentice and Bernardo the curandero. Like personages in dreams, all the characters in a novel are the author. Still, I think it helps to know where an author came from, not to read his or her works but to put you in touch with him as you would with a performing artist whom you can see in the flesh. Celebrity is an inappropriate concept for writers, usually, but feedback is a workable one. So, here are some of the accidents of my life that I believe helped form me: I’m the last of five children, my oldest sibling twelve years older than I, the closest in age six years my senior. My mother died when I was six, an accident of her life I can’t blame her for but have never fully accepted: I never got enough of her. My father had an extensive library, and I read constantly growing up, though since college television has cut into my reading time. I was raised a Catholic, going to parochial schools and an all-boys Catholic prep school. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, back when it was the consensus best university in the world. This is a humbling experience: you may have been a whiz in high school, you were no big deal on that campus. I live in Ashland, Oregon, which is an interesting small town, with a world-class repertory theater and a satisfying mixture of foresters, bohemians, geeks, artists and coupon clippers. I married (and divorced) three times, all interesting women, and fathered five children. All of these have shaped me. These authors’ works have most informed my own writing: Elmore Leonard, whom I put first because I’ve read him most recently. There is no one better at catching the flavor of places and peoples through using their patois. Thomas Mann, whose Joseph and His Brothers is the nonpareil of epic novels, indeed, may be the best work of prose fiction ever written. (I consider Shakespeare’s plays to be poetry.) William Faulkner, whose apocryphal Yoknapatawpha County was in my youth as familiar to me as any place I’ve ever lived, and who made me realize what power words have. Faulkner’s short fiction is matched only by Mann’s. Ernest Hemingway, whose The Sun Also Rises surpasses any novel I’ve read in the way he put words down on paper; for a large part of my formative years I read this book every eighteen months or so. Albert Camus, whose novel, The Plague, touches my heart beyond any prose I’ve read. Carlos Castaneda, whose first four books (fiction? non-fiction?) blew out the corners of my imagination. Aeschylus, whose Oresteia made me understand what drama is. E. E. Cummings, who demonstrated that a seemingly mined-out convention, the sonnet, could be fresh and new in the hands of a master. W. B. Yeats, whose corpus is the standard by which I judge all modern poets. Here are some other likes and dislikes: To cook: it’s the bead game, it’s a challenge, it is manic and relaxing at once. I bake all my own (sourdough) bread and make a mean soufflé. My favorite movies: Black Orpheus and Shoot the Piano Player, with 8½ Some Like It Hot, Treasure of Sierra Madre and Chushingura not far behind. My favorite music: almost anything but Rap and the heaviest of Rock and Roll—Allison Kraus to Denny Zeitlin, with Chopin, Beethoven and The Beatles thrown in for good measure. But if I were shipwrecked with the work of just one person, it would have to be Bach’s. Writing is both a therapy and my compulsion. In 2011 I published eight novels, some started back in the Eighties, four completed last year, two started and finished in 2011. For a list of extant works, click here.

The Girl on the Hill by Alenka Co The Girl on the Hill by Alenka Co April 21, 2012 11197 words Read a sample
a collection of poems and essays written over the years , mainly in Tasmania while living in the hills of Yarlington Tiers
Author bio:
Alenka Co is an uncommon name for an uncommon lady. She moves through life with a quiet grace and beauty that is a reflection of her deep love of dance but not a formal disciplined dance, a natural carefree spirit moved by music and emotions, a love that she has shared with thousands of children over the years and an uninhibited natural grace that , I believe , is seen in the many thousands of photos I have taken of her over our life time together. To the outside world she is often seen as a quiet private person but I have been privlileged to see the wild abandoned passionate side also , this is a woman who lives and feels life on a very deep level, moved by the simplest things and a champion of the downtrodden. Angered and outspoken when confronted by injustice or cruelty, critical of the callous and uncaring world of politicians and any others She despises false compliments and flattery but sincerity and honesty are her most treasured prizes, cannot abide fools but shows compassion and tolerance and concern for those less fortunate or gifted , again seen in her quiet manner when working with children. Her love of literature is reflected both in her insatiable appetite for books and constant search for quality writing and writers and her unrelenting critical assessment of her own work. Writing does not come easily in the sense that near enough is never good enough for her own work it must be right , it must feel and move with the grace and beauty of life as she knows and values it , to flow from point to point ,idea to idea and as naturally as water flows. All her words are chosen, examined and placed carefully often being pulled out and replaced if they jar , revised and rewritten time and again until it is "right" Her love for life , words and movement is reflected in her writing. Her wish in offering her novels is not wealth or fame but to share this love of words as she shared her love for dance with so many so she wishes to share her worlds of people and stories she has created, the characters are her children , her world as it should be but also with all the tragedy, humour, love and passion that exsits in her real world It is an impossible task to describe a person as complex as Alenka in these few words I will finish by saying she admires modesty and is very self-effacing and abhors and detests bragaddacio and the modern idea of selp promotion of getting out there and selling your work and yourself ,public speaking would terrify her if it was for her own benefit yet I know she can stand and talk for others easily, which is why I have to write this for her. "my works should survive or fall on their own merits not on my ability to sell them and myself" Alenka loves natural and real and hates fake and contrived I think it shows in her writing So in the end you the reader are to be the judge and jury of her work, its worth Ron Co email: alenkaco2012@gmail.com
Percy and Me 'neath the Yum Gum Tree (a poem) by Elaine Stirling Percy and Me 'neath the Yum Gum Tree (a poem) by Elaine Stirling April 21, 2012 1690 words Read a sample
A double sestina with twelve repeating end words and a 12-line concluding envoi doubles the fun and the story effect. In “Percy and Me ‘neath the Yum Gum Tree”, a woman flees shallow modernity in search of veritas, only to get strung up, in the way of all good myths, in the company of a famous Romantic poet and curious wee people who bite.
